Greetings from a slow warming Southern California Summer,

It’s been quite some time since I last updated my blog.  It was right before my trip to Petrosani in April.  Well, this update I have plenty of pics to share from the trip and others as well.

Starting with our (remember, I flew with Costel si Johanna) time in Petrosani. The time went by so fast, it felt like it was just a couple days.  Spending time with the girls was the best.  Each morning, I would be one of the first ones up, I guess I just didn’t want to miss out on anything.  While the coffee was brewing, I would hear the girls wake up and ask “tati” daddy for “lapte cu ciocolata” hot chocolate.  We would gather in the kitchen and just sit and talk.  You know, some might think it’s boring, but when you are able to spend this time with loved ones, it’s the best time in the world.

I brought some Peanut Butter with me and the girls had never eaten it before.  Needless to say, they liked it. We went into town, ate mici @ the “piata” market place.  Some have said that Petrosani has some of the best mici around, I agreed!

One of the things I was looking forward to was visiting the kids at Betania Christian Orphanage.  Before I was making trips out to Ploiesti and moved to Brasov, I was able to spend time with the kids…a lot of time.  Again, just getting to know them and helping them with their school work was some of the best times. I just wanted to show them that someone cares.  On weekends, I would bring home some of the kids and they would fit right in.  Well, seeing them again was great.  They all got so much bigger.  Not in the stomach area like me, but taller and just growing up.

I am able to chat with Alex when he is online.  I spoke to him last week and I was reminded of a conversation I had with the Administrator of the orphanage, “Fratele  Crisan” Brother Crisan.  He and the staff normally take the kids on a week or so long trip, camping once a year.  He said he might not be able to do it this year as the funds that are coming in are low (as they are all over the globe).  I know the times they have out camping are special to them.  I really wanted to make sure this trip happened.

Then I came back to America and got caught up in my work schedule, things around the house, and the normal “stuff.”  In order for them to make this trip, they need a total of $400.00.  I’m not sure if this was the total amount needed or if this is the amount left needed for them to be able to go.  I mentioned to “Fratele Crisan” that I would see if I could do something about it when I got back.  I pray it’s not too late, I know they wanted to go in July.

Since our time in Romania was right in the middle of the Catholic and Orthodox celebration of Easter, we decided to have one while we were there.  Basically we would be there when Easter was celebrated in America and we would be here when Easter was being celebrated in Romania.  It was a small gathering, but it’s not quantity that matters….it’s quality!

In my last update, I asked for prayer for the development and delivery of Damaris, Alin and Catalina’s third little girl.  Well, she was born and is growing already.  Below are some pictures of her first day and some more recent pictures.  Thank you for praying, I am still waiting to hear how her kidneys have developed.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

When we help those who can’t help themselves — those who have gotten themselves in trouble, those who have been falsely accused, those who are facing death — we are helping Jesus himself. What would Jesus do? He would be helping someone find God out of their hopelessness and despair.

My Prayer…

Father, please give me wisdom to see my opportunities to serve your people as I try to help them understand your incredible grace. In the name of my Redeemer, Savior, and Friend, Jesus. Amen.

Greetings from on again and off again rainy Southern California,

First things first. I decided to re-open my facebook account because there are just so many people that you can get in touch with. A lot of friends and acquaintances are re connecting through this thing.  Ah, modern technology.

Also, I am going to Romania!!! Some of you might not know, I am taking 2 weeks vacation time and spending it with my guys in Romania and at Betania, for the most part. Costel, Johanna and I are flying together.  It’s Costel’s first trip back since he left in 2000.  We are a bit on the anxious side, but I think it’s a good anxious! I will keep both my facebook page and this blog up to date (hopefully on a daily basis) of our trip. Please remember to keep us in prayer.

Alin is making room for us at the house in Petrosani and I can’t wait to see his and Catalina’s little girls. Of course the adults as well. I have posted latest pictures of the girls on my facebook page.  They are getting so big already.  Alin tells me that Miriam (the younger of the two) just has conversations (baby talk) with anyone.

Since my last update, both issues with the pump and the sewer line have been fixed. Alin wanted to get these all taken care of before we arrived. All this and his wife is expecting…due in May. Please keep Catalina in prayer, they just shared with me that the Doctor told them one of the baby’s kidneys is larger than normal, and that she should come back to him after Catalina gives birth to avoid any infection. The same visit showed that “it’s a girl.”

As I mentioned before, there are times when I can sit on a Saturday morning and just chat. This particular time, I was able to spend a little time with Alex Ciuciu from Betania (Alex used to come and spend weekends at my house in Petrosani with others from Betania) and he sent me some pictures. I can’t believe how fast these guys are growing. It breaks my heart that I am missing all of this. Below are some pictures of the kids from Betania Christian Orphanage. I can’t wait to see them.

God’s Love And Ours

Franklin Graham regrets it now, but in his youth he was wild and rebellious. One day he went roaring up to his dad’s house on his Harley Davidson motorcycle to ask for some money. Dressed in his leathers, dusty and bearded, he burst into his father’s living room—and walked right into a meeting of Billy’s executive board.

Without hesitation, Billy Graham identified Franklin as his son. Then he proudly introduced him to every member of the board. Billy did not apologize for his son or show any shame or guilt. Franklin wrote later in his autobiography, Rebel With a Cause, that the love and respect his father gave him that day never left him, even during his rebellious years.

Our children don’t have to earn our love. To withhold love for our own selfish purposes is to follow the enemy, not God. God’s love for us is undeserved. We did nothing to earn it; no good in us merited it. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). In all our relationships, especially with our children, we must genuinely show that same kind of love.

We are called to treat our children, and all people, with love and respect. It helps to remember what we were when Christ died for us.  David C. Egner

Greetings from a VERY Warm Winter in Southern California,

How weird is this weather?  Well, I’m not used to it.  There should be snow on the ground and I should be slipping and sliding on the frozen sidewalks walking in town.  Using the fan in the beginning to mid January just seems foreign to me.

Anyhow, I hope your celebration of ringing in the New Year was a great one.  I worked on New Year’s eve till almost three in the afternoon.  I was exhausted from all the hours we put in that week, so I went home wanting to take a little nani (nap) when I woke up it was already after 11:PM and I just stayed in bed and wished myself a “La Multi Ani!”….rolled over and fell back to sleep after watching a little of  the New York’s annual show with Dick Clark.  I DID get A LOT of rest  : )

I wanted to share news of Catalina’s condition.  Sorry for waiting so long to update you on her. I talked to Ene and he said she was home from the hospital.  She is doing well and I understand that she will be easing up on all the extra work around the house.

He also made sure to tell me of the whole day of digging they had to do because the sewer line had some issues.  “It was an easy fix”, he said, just being able to get to the pipe and fix it was the hard part.

A recent conversation with Alin made me aware of another issue.  The pump which pumps the hot water throughout the house, from the fire in the outside room, died.  It has been faithful for quite some time and it served its purpose.  Many winters that pump has spread the warmth in the entire house.  Alin and I are going to get a new pump, in the meantime they are using a loaner.

I don’t remember if I ever mentioned this, but I started a facebook account last October when Anca was in America visiting.  We were talking on the phone and I just decided to open it.  Today I just deleted it.  Sorry Anca :/  I think I logged into that thing like 3 times.  Today it said I had 28 new invites that I never answered.  I have a hard enough time keeping this updated.

One thing I did neglect to mention in my last update, within the last 5-6 months, maybe longer, I have been getting in touch with LONG time friends.  People who I grew up with, that lived on the same street as I did, whom I haven’t seen in like 15 years or more.

Now, promise not to laugh…these pictures are WAY old.  Remember those 110 Kodak cameras?  Well, if you don’t you are too young   These pics were taken with one of those cameras.  I must warn you, I wasn’t walking with the Lord then.

Lastly, I wanted to share another morning devotional with you.

The vision Paul had on the road to Damascus was not a passing emotional experience, but a vision that had very clear and emphatic directions for him. And Paul stated, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19). Our Lord said to Paul, in effect, “Your whole life is to be overpowered or subdued by Me; you are to have no end, no aim, and no purpose but Mine.” And the Lord also says to us, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go . . .” (John 15:16).

When we are born again, if we are spiritual at all, we have visions of what Jesus wants us to be. It is important that I learn not to be “disobedient to the heavenly vision”Ðnot to doubt that it can be attained. It is not enough to give mental assent to the fact that God has redeemed the world, nor even to know that the Holy Spirit can make all that Jesus did a reality in my life. I must have the foundation of a personal relationship with Him. Paul was not given a message or a doctrine to proclaim. He was brought into a vivid, personal, overpowering relationship with Jesus Christ.Acts 26:16 is tremendously compelling “. . . to make you a minister and a witness . . . .” There would be nothing there without a personal relationship. Paul was devoted to a Person, not to a cause. He was absolutely Jesus Christ’s. He saw nothing else and he lived for nothing else. “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2)

Craciun Fericit si La Multi Ani!

(Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!)

I know it’s been quite sometime since I last updated this blog, but I don’t have a lot to write about since being in America.   My main goal with this blog was to keep people updated with what was happening with my days in Romania and what (or whom) I believe God had placed on my heart to occupy my time.  I do hear  from my guys in Romania from time to time and it’s always a joy to see how the girls are growing.

Some of you might already know, Catalina is pregnant with their 3^rd child.  I called the other day wanting to discuss somethings about Christmas and she was in the hospital, because her water broke…from what she told me.  She is five months along and she will NOT stay off her feet.  Alin later told me that she was rushing around to get the house ready for Christmas, they painted and fixed some walls in the kitchen and just her daily motherly duties.  Please keep Catalina in your prayers, when I talked to her, she told me that she was helping another patient to the restroom and Catalina fainted.  She is stubborn in always wanting to serve.

In October I celebrated my birthday and it happened to be the same time Costel and Johanna were in Southern Cal.  One of Johanna’s good friends was getting married and Johanna was in her wedding.  While the Bride’s maids were primping for the wedding, Costel came to OC and he, Jeje and I went and celebrated my birthday with some sushi.  It was Jeje’s first time joining us for “all you can eat sushi” in Lake Forest, and between the three of us, I think the sushi chef was thinking, “ok, that’s enough”!

Here are a couple of snaps of our time there.

November is normal day to day work…did I mention that I was hired full time back at Wonderware?  I left WW in 1997 when I moved to Romania and would come and do some temp work whilehere on furlough through the years.  I went in and asked if they needed any help and they put me to work on a temporary basis.  After a number of months, something opened up and I was put on the payroll.  It was a nice four day weekend for Thanksgiving.

December is the busiest time of the year for my position @ WW.  Part of my job is renewing the Comprehensive Support Contracts and by the end of December, they all should be current.  It’s been one hectic month.  I did get a call from Colleen inviting me to spend one Saturday with her, Jeje and the kids for Jeje’s birthday.  We walked around Fashion Island and had Cheesecake Factory for linner….you know,  a little late lunch and early dinner.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. Zechariah 8:9

To these people who had grown weary of building the Temple, Zechariah comes on the scene with the word of the Lord, saying, “What you’re doing has huge significance. All of history is flowing down the channel of prophecy and the Temple you’re hesitating to build will be the very place from which the Lord will rule. A Branch will come. The Kingdom shall be established. Old people will walk in dignity. Kids will play in safety. Every person will experience prosperity. Therefore, what you’re doing will impact all of eternity.”

So too, if you’re at a point where you’re wondering why you should keep teaching Sunday school or carving out time for family devotions, why you should labor in this ministry or that calling, I believe the Lord would say to you that what you’re doing is of great significance to Him. It might seem small to you, but don’t despise the day of small things because it’s a foundation for what He will do – culminating in the coming of Christ, in the establishing of His Kingdom. We have a huge destiny, gang. Let us press on, robed in His righteousness, empowered by His Spirit, seeing the big picture of where it’s all going

Greetings from Southern California,

I know it’s been a while since Easter and I wish I had more time to write what’s going on. I try to stay in contact with my guys in Romania as much as I can. I now can understand, being on this end, why communication is scarce while on the field.

Lots has happened since Easter. I am still staying with my mom and that is one reason which spurred me to write. In less than 2 weeks, she will be going in for her second reconstructive knee surgery. Her first knee was a success and now she is going in for her other knee. I don’t know the severity or delicacy of this type of surgery, but I can imagine she might be going through a little fear. Please remember her in your prayers. That God would guide the doctor’s hands and He would see her through this surgery.

Memorial Day weekend I was able to take a day off and visit Costel and Johanna and Johanna’s parents. I had such a good time visiting with them. I got a couple snaps of this beach.

One Saturday morning, I had a video chat with Alin and Catalina for 3 hours I saw Sara and Miriam and briefly talked to Sara. They were at someone’s birthday party from the fellowship and I was able to see some familiar faces of the people in Petrosani. It was really good to see them. My heart was filled with so much joy seeing these people and I can’t wait to go for a visit to see them in person.

Please also remember the church in Petrosani in your prayers. They have gone through a time of trials but God has started a healing and I know they could use your prayers. Also a number of the boys from the orphanage (some believers, some not) have had horrible things happen to them, while under people in ministry. Time does heal wounds, but some things leave life time effects, and unfortunately this is the case. Please ask God for healing for these boys/young men.

The Lord has been so gracious to me since being back. He has taken care of ALL my needs and I can’t thank Him enough.

I am working and still getting established. A little more used to So Cal again, but OFTEN thoughts of different parts of Romania fill my mind. Walking in Brasov, playing with Simba in Petrosani, talking with Cristi in Ploiesti. And of course my guys and their familes. George si Beka, Alin si Catalina, Ene and Elemer. I miss these things so much, but look forward to what He has in store for me. Luckily I can talk with Costel si Johanna on a daily basis.

I know it’s been quite sometime since doing an update to my blog and this is like a prelude to my real update. Tomorrow is Easter Sunday and one of my morning devotionals really spoke to me…I just thought I would share.

Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen. —Romans 1:20

A man wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and a baseball cap positioned himself against a wall beside a trash can at the L’Enfant Plaza station in Washington, DC. He pulled out a violin and began to play. In the next 43 minutes, as he performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by, ignoring him.

No one knew it, but the man playing outside the Metro was Joshua Bell, one of the finest classical musicians in the world, playing some of the most elegant music ever written on a $3.5 million Stradivarius. But no crowd gathered for the virtuoso. “It was a strange feeling, that people were actually . . . ignoring me,” said Bell.

God also knows what it feels like to be ignored. The apostle Paul said that God has sovereignly planted evidence of His existence in the very nature of man. And creation delivers an unmistakable message about His creativity, beauty, power, and character. Although God has revealed His majesty, many refuse to acknowledge and thank Him. But God will hold everyone responsible for ignoring who He is and what He has revealed: “They are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful” (Rom. 1:20-21). Let us acknowledge and thank the Virtuoso of heaven, who has wonderfully revealed Himself to us. — Marvin Williams

Yesterday (Friday) at work a friend and co worker called me over to his workstation and showed me the video below, it goes along pretty well with this morning’s devotional, so again… just thought I’d share….Thanks Mike!

Hope your celebration of Christ’s resurrection is a blessed one.

Already the holidays came in like a whirlwind and then left again. Here we are in 2008,where has the time gone? Next month will mark 11 years since I left to Romania and sometimes it feels like yesterday I was walking to the piata (market place) pointing at objects while Ene was teaching me the Romanian word for them. When I went to Uricani and sat next to Costel in the TV room and we had a semi understandable conversation with my limited new language. I walked back from “Pestera Boli” after a baptism with Joey, George, Danut and Ene. Elemer came to me and told me that he never knew his dad and considered me his own. I invited Alin and Ionel into our home (originally from Rimnicu Valcea) because they weren’t going to have a place to live. Soon after, Alin told me that he also considered me his dad. Many arguments, tears, laughs and great times of joy in these years.

I am sure most already know, but I never made an official announcement here on my blog. I believe the Lord has shared with me that my time in Romania is complete. I look back and marvel at what HE has done in the lives and hearts of my guys. Complete awestruck on why He would place me there to be apart of it all, an awesome blessing to say the least. To be honest, I don’t know if He will call me back for a long period of time, I want to be open to that. But as for now, I believe He has me here. I will always have my “Romanian” family in various parts of the country and long to go and visit, someday.

I’ve heard it said people go onto the mission field thinking how they were going to “minister” for God. Hopefully they will see it’s actually God ministers TO them while out there.

When I got here in August, I had intended to pray and seek God for more confirmation about what I felt he was telling my heart, regarding Romania/USA. I asked a few people to keep it in prayer as well. As doors started to open, I walked through them and I have seen his confirmation. God used someone near and dear to me to give me a car. I walked into the company I left, looking to see if they were hiring and they put me to work the following week. Granted, I am a “temp” or “contractor” I am waiting to see if other doors open.

It’ll be 5 months on the ninth of January and culture shock has already been hitting, slowly. I would ask for prayer for this. Also, I wanted to apologize to many people that I haven’t even contacted or come to see. I am still getting used to my new schedule. God has enabled me to be here for my mom and I am making her my priority, for now.

I am not sure what I am going to do with my blog, so I will keep that in prayer as well. I would like to keep people afloat of what’s happening with my guys, and other ministries that are going on in Romania. There are some GREAT people out there serving God and truly making disciples of the Romanian people. Giving out of their own lives and pouring into lives of children and people who were thrown away by their parents and society.

Ok, so I am going to have a proud moment. George and Beka were interviewed by one of the bigger television stations in the country, comparable to ABC, CBS or NBC here. It’s called PRO TV. On their blog, (New Beginnings Brasov, from my link page) you can go and read the transcript in English and watch the video (link on their site) in Romaneste.

Please keep the missionaries, people and the country as a whole in prayer. God is doing soo much there.

Matthew 26:67,68

Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?” (NKJV)

Now, I know this is not the “normal” Christmas verse as everyone likes to see baby Jesus come into the world (as do I) born in a manger, laying in a feeding trough, because it’s peaceful. It IS true His coming into the world was and still IS an awesome gift to mankind.

I wanted to just share something that crossed my mind recently. I know God is all knowing, all powerful, all loving and all righteous. His judgments are fair and good. With this in mind, Christ knowing what he was going to be facing one day, still chose to be born into a human body and endure through His time on earth, so that all of mankind could choose life.

I’ve heard it taught Jesus’ sweating drops of blood was because He couldn’t imagine Himself being crucified. I believe Jesus was in agony, in the Garden of Gethsemane, from the inevitable separation of fellowship from the Father. The physical pain from the cat of nine tails and nails through His hands and feet, was nothing in comparison to having God the Father turn away His face from Jesus. Only if WE could feel the same way.

My prayer this Christmas would be to remember ALL that Christ went through to give us the gift of eternal life and shudder the thought of God possibly looking another way from our lives.

It looks like today is the last day I have for a mini update in October, so I better get to it. This is a really small one.

First off, I would join in the many others in asking prayer for the families who lost their loved ones, homes and belongings in this past week’s fires throughout Southern California. Daily, I would wake up to news stories of the fires and their continued spreading as the Santa Ana winds kept the flames alive.

I would like to praise God for His hand in a safe and healthy delivery of my second grand baby, Miriam Gloria Carabasa. She was born on September 13^th and already her older sister is very fond of her as is her parents.

Greetings from “partly cloudy” California,

I wanted to write when I returned from my visit with Costel and Johanna right away, but other things got in the way. So, here it is.

The morning when I was boarding the train, we were running a little late and noticed that my mom’s gas tank was almost empty. It’s about a 10 minute drive from where she lives, but I didn’t want to chance it, missing the train. Again, being the first time taking the train in America, I wanted to get there a little early and be prepared. The day before, I was able to go to this store in Fullerton which sells Romanian food (mersi Simona!) as Costel asked me to pick up some mici, pateu and virslii. I packed a mini “igloo” lunch box with the food and ice. It stayed pretty well on the eight hour train ride.

While arriving at the station there were some people sitting curbside and I asked them if the train had left already, as it was, they were waiting for the same train. Our train arrives and I have a connection in L.A. to another train which one from their group was also riding. It turned out to be her first time traveling on the train as well. We sat together on the second leg of our trip and discovered that she and I went to the same elementary, middle and high schools. Only she had been there 10 years ahead of me. We then exchanged some names that might sound familiar but none were. I started to ask her if she knew any of my older brother’s friends and she told me of a place where she used to hang out with her friends. She named some of those friends and said, “and then there were the Stillwells..” and I jumped in, “I know Jean Stillwell!” Then she says, “Jeanie!!” It sure is a small world.

When I got into Salinas, Costel and Johanna were waiting for me. I was a little nervous because I had never met Costel’s wife. She is a total sweetheart, Costel is a lucky young man. I was taken back because I wasn’t used to Costel driving. He is a man now!! Awake and out the door as the sun is rising and comes back in the evening. He brought me to a jobsite where he has done some tile work. Well, when we get there the entire floor (including 2 balconies) are tiled. He did it ALL, and that’s not counting the tile in both bathrooms. He did an awesome job (and I am not being bias ) We then drove around the area and he showed me other houses where he had done some work. It was a great time together with them. Sunday AM we went to their home church and they took me to a really nice place, right on the coast, for lunch. They just spoiled me.
